Nestled in the mountains of West Virginia, Cass
Scenic Railroad State Park offers excursions that
transport you back in time to relive an era when steam-driven
locomotives were an essential part of everyday life. Trips to
Cass are filled with rich histories of the past, unparalleled
views of a vast wilderness area, and close-up encounters with
the sights and sounds of original steam-driven locomotives. The
town of Cass remains relatively unchanged. The restored company
houses now rented as vacation cottages, add to the charm and
atmosphere of the town. From the company store and museum to the
train depot, you'll find an abundance of things to do prior to
your departure on the historic Cass Railroad. The Cass Scenic
Railroad is the same line built in 1901 to haul lumber to the
mill in Cass. The locomotives are the same Shay locomotives used
in Cass, and in the rainforests of British Columbia for more
than a half-century. Many of the passenger cars are old logging
flat-cars that have been refurbished.

The
Hawaiian Railway Society was formed in 1970 to
save what remained of Hawaii's railroad history. This
educational, non-profit organization was able to get the
remaining stretch of track on Oahu (from Ewa to Nanakuli)
placed on the State and National Registers of Historic
Sites. Today, the Society has restored about 6.5 miles
of track and is working to restore more. Three vintage
diesel locomotives have been restored to operation and
several steam locomotives have been cosmetically
restored. The famous Dillingham parlor car has been
restored and is occasionally put on track. Hawaii
has a rich history of railroading. Seven public common
carrier railroads ran on four of the islands.
The
Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association is

Skunk
Train - Built as a logging railroad, the Skunk line
began that year as a logical vehicle for moving massive redwood
logs to Mendocino Coast sawmills from the rugged back country.
Steam passenger service was started in 1904, extended to the
town of Willits in 1911, and discontinued in 1925 when the
self-powered, yellow "Skunk" rail cars were inaugurated. The
little trains were quickly nicknamed for their original gas
engines, which prompted folks to say, "You can smell 'em before
you can see 'em.'
